Increase your color IQ.

Color Wheel image courtsey: rentaldecorating.com

The color wheel? The color wheel arranges colors of the rainbow in a circle. There are 3 primary colors which form the base; red, blue and yellow.

Mix the equal parts of two primary colors, and you get the 3 secondary colors; orange (red and yellow), Violet (red and blue), and green (blue and yellow).

Intermediate colors are created by mixing one primary color and its adjacent secondary color, as for example, red – orange, red – violet, red – violet, blue – violet, blue – green, yellow – green.

Neutral colors such as black, white, cream and grey are essential to any color scheme; by their quietness they act as a foil to bright and brilliant shades.

The color wheel can be divided in to cool colors (red, yellow, orange) and Warm colors (red, yellow and orange). Warm colors cheer up a room that is cold and windy.

Cool colors create a restful and soothing atmosphere.

Bold colors give a feeling of being closer because they are arresting.

You can make a long room appear square if you paint the two end walls a darker shade.

Pastel colors create the illusion of space.

A small area painted in a light shade will appear larger than if it were painted dark.

Dark colors absorb heat, light colors reflect it. Use a dark color to cut out the glare in a very bright room; paint a dark room white, to get maximum light.

Color changes under different light conditions. For instance, a dark color looks brighter in a large, well- lit room. Or pale colors tend to look insipid under artificial light; and blues and greens change shades under fluorescent light.

Color is affected by color next to it. Yellow appears cool against a dark brown background, but will appear warmer against green; or a white lamp blends into a beige background, but will stand out with dramatic effect against a dark backdrop.

How to find perfect match for your home.

There are 5 easy ways to harmonize colors

Monochromatic scheme; Take only one color, but utilize some neutral color, to form a restful color scheme.

The Related Scheme

Here you combine shades that are side by side on the color wheel, for a very refreshing effect.

The complementary scheme makes use of opposites on the color wheel. Let one color dominate and the other remains discreet. This is a very arresting scheme which can be used effectively in large rooms.

The Triad Scheme; Choose any three colors that are at equal distance from each other on the color wheel. A very cheerful and inviting scheme will be the result.

The Contrast Scheme; Here you can use two or three unrelated colors provided they are separated by large expanses of neutral color. A very dramatic scheme, if you balance your colors well.

Some Color Facts.

Your choice of color scheme must take these points into consideration. Colors should not be monotonous. Large areas of bland color can induce boredom.

Areas that attract dirt, such as kitchens and bathrooms can be painted white or pale color, provided you use a good quality emulsion or an oil paint which can be washed easily.

Use colors that are easy to wash and maintain. For instance, paint often-used areas such as doors and cupboards with dark color.

When one room opens on to another, a color continuity should be maintained. For instance, the color of the wall in room could be the color of the carpet in the adjoining room.

In a small room, if the woodwork and furniture are painted the same color as the wall, the room will look larger.

Awkward architectural features like a prominent pillar; can be played down if painted the same color as the wall.

A special feature like an interesting grille can be highlighted if painted a different shade.

Choose a pleasing scheme for entrances and living rooms; a cheerful scheme for dining rooms; a restful scheme for bedrooms; and a colorful scheme for nurseries, verandahs and playrooms.

The treatment damp walls or other major problems that need and expert’s opinion can be sourced from marketing division of any good paint companies.
