John and Kenny were racing side-by-side just before the accident but as he crossed the finish line against Kenny Bernstein. Bernstein's Funny Car drifted into Force's lane clipping the final timing cone, which subsequently punctured Force's tyre forcing him into Bernstein's car before making contact with the retaining wall. Luckily Bernstein did not suffer any injuries in the accident.

Also, Force suffered slight fractures to a number of fingers on his right hand. John was immediately airlifted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
